Storyline: Bird watcher Warre ( Huub Stapel ) discovers a creature with the outward characteristics of a very small girl, who, however, has wings instead of arms. He regards it as a special bird, but his wife Tine ( Joke Tjalsma ) thinks it is more of a girl. They call her first Birdie, but because she pronounces it herself as Viegeltje (she can not pronounce some vowels, including the o), she changes her name into it, so that she can at least pronounce her own name. Tine tries to raise her as an ordinary girl, but is concerned that because she does not have her hands, for example, she can not eat properly. Warre sees more the positive aspects of being able to fly. She is growing fast.
When the winter comes, Viegeltje flies with the other birds to the south, after which Warre and Tine start looking. They find her several times, but then she flies away again. They are helped by another girl, Loetje. An awkward rescue worker also tries to help. Loetje befriends the boy Bor.
Eventually they say goodbye to Viegeltje. They hope that they will come along again during the trek.
